This piece was written for trombonist Haim Avitsur, who was the guest artist of the evening. Alaria Chamber Music Ensemble musicians Nancy Garniez, piano, and Yuri Vodovoz, violin, rounded out the trio.</p>

<p>In February 2003, at the annual concert of new music by Mannes faculty and alumni, two of Richard Russell’s recent compositions were presented. Just before intermission, <em>Three Songs of Carl Sandburg</em> was premiered with soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle accompanied by R. Stewart Powell, piano. After intermission, Haim Avitsur performed the solo on a piece for trombone and CD titled <em>Balance</em>.</p>
