Richard Russell’s piece, NeverSummer, was chosen for an informal reading under the auspices of the New York Composers Circle, April 27, 2006. This piece was written for trombonist Haim Avitsur, who was the guest artist of the evening. Alaria Chamber Music Ensemble musicians Nancy Garniez, piano, and Yuri Vodovoz, violin, rounded out the trio.

Marking his international debut as a composer, Richard Russell’s Design for Lightning was performed May 19, 2003 at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel. Haim Avitsur was the soloist, presenting a concert of new electronic music featuring trombone.

Two pieces Premiered at Mannes

In February 2003, at the annual concert of new music by Mannes faculty and alumni, two of Richard Russell’s recent compositions were presented. Just before intermission, Three Songs of Carl Sandburg was premiered with soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle accompanied by R. Stewart Powell, piano. After intermission, Haim Avitsur performed the solo on a piece for trombone and CD titled Balance.
