“Three Partings” at Mannes

I was very pleased to welcome some new interpreters of my music this past weekend, February 19. Sofia Dimitrova, soprano, and her sister, Stanichka Dimitrova, violin, have performed my music many times. This past weekend I was delighted to welcome some new musicians: Christopher Schneller, piano, and Claire Stancarone, cello.

They performed my Three Partings, a song cycle of three poems by Lord Byron. It was premiered a year ago in New Jersey with different singers in the different songs, but this year it was performed as a whole song cycle. It was a marathon concert at Mannes College of Music, with many of the school’s composers (alumni and faculty) contributing pieces to the afternoon.

“Three Partings” at Mannes on February 19

Richard D. Russell’s song cycle, “Three Partings,” on texts of Lord Byron, will be performed at Mannes College of Music on February 19, 2012. Mannes is at 150 West 85th Street. The concert starts at 1:30pm and is free and open to the public.
This is the New York premiere of the work. The performers are Sofia Dimitrova, soprano, Stanichka Dimitrova, violin, Claire Stancarone, cello, and Christopher Schneller, piano.

The concert is the annual New Music from Mannes Faculty and Alumni. Also on the concert are compositions from Carol Bevan, Wendy Griffiths, Faye Ellen Silverman, Jonathan Bell, and Andrij Legkij.

Two Russell pieces at Mannes College on June 30

Two pieces by Richard Russell will be featured in a concert at Mannes College of Music on June 30, 8pm. Mannes is at 150 West 85th Street in New York, and the concert is free and open to the public.

The first piece is a world premiere of Four Shakespeare Songs in Madrigal Style, featuring soprano Sofia Dimitrova and mezzo Christina Goyne. The second piece is Time is Not an Option, the awarded commission from Voices Up! recently premiered at Fordham University. Hope to see you there!

I was fortunate to have two wonderful performances of world premieres this past Sunday afternoon at Mannes College of Music. First, soprano Sofia Dimitrova, accompanied by Tamara Cashour, performed “When Time is Over” a collection of four songs with texts by Emily Dickinson. Second, an Adagio movement from a forthcoming string quartet. The ¬†quartet is pictured here: Stani Dimitrova and Lisa Romain, violins, Rose Hashimoto, viola, Desiree Abbey, cello. Presentation at Mannes

I decided to change the title of my lecture to something that was more appropriate to the matter at hand: “Questions my Composition Teacher Never Asked Me.” I’m glad to say I had a great turnout, and I’m positive I helped my audience think about music in new ways.

Look for a reprise of this lecture in March, 2009, when it will be presented by the New York Composers Circle. In the meantime, here are some pics from last Wednesday’s presentation (click for larger view), in which I’m making a point about Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Three States of Water at Mannes

Three States of Water is a difficult, virtuostic piece, and so I was delighted to hear it performed at Mannes College of Music on May 13. Here is Mary Barto, the director of the flute ensemble, introducing the work.

This piece was originally written for three flutes rather than a full ensemble. The original version will be performed next week by Mary Bart, Aki Kasuga, and Jonathan Engle at New York University next Tuesday, May 20. The concert time is 8pm, and the venue is the Frederick Loewe theater at 35 West 4 Street. Suggested donation is $15. For more information, head to the website for the New York Composers Circle.

Rilke Songs at Mannes

A great concert yesterday at Mannes College of Music, with compositions by Wayne Alpern, Chris Park, David Ames, Wendy Griffiths, Faye Ellen Silverman, and Ryan Tracy. Conversations (Faces) Performed at Mannes

Conversations (Faces) was performed December 4, 2005 at Mannes College of Music’s Concert Hall. Julia Dusman was the pianist, Ana Milosavjlevic played violin, and Nick Dinnerstein on cello rounded out the trio.

Reverie at Mannes, February 2005

Reverie for Flute and Piano, a piece written while still a college composition student, was performed at Mannes College of Music’s Concert Hall in February 2005. Troy Etter was the flute soloist, and Colette Valentine was the pianist. This piece was selected for performance in a concert of music by Mannes faculty and alumni.
