This is an afternoon concert, starting at 3pm; admission is free.

Getting to Stony Brook
By Car
From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles.

By Train
Take the Long Island Railroad’s Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines.

Take Nicolls Road north to the second entrance on your left, the Main Entrance. Go straight through the light and hook a quick left into the parking garage — the closest parking to the Staller Center. Coming out of the garage, you will pass the administration building on your left, and the next building ahead of you is the Music Building. Pass under the breezeway and ahead you will see the entrance to the Staller Center lobby.

Sofia Dimitrova and Stani Dimitrova will be performing my Two Songs of Rilke on Sunday, February 17 at 1:30 pm. They will be joined by pianist Tomoko Nakayama, who premiered the piece with these two last summer. Also on the program are pieces by other Mannes College faculty and alumni. Every year this is a varied and interesting concert, so there’s something for everyone! I hope to see you there. This is a free concert with no tickets or reservations necessary. Mannes is at 150 West 85th Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam, and the Concert Hall is on the second floor.

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to present my Two Rilke Songs. I wrote this piece for the two sisters who presented it, Sofia Dimitrova and Stani Dimitrova, with Catherine Miller accompanying on piano. This piece was a last minute addition to the concert, so bravi to the fine musicians who were able to bring this together at the last minute!

The venue is the gorgeous Engleman Recital Hall at Baruch College, 55 Lexington Avenue at 25th Street. The concert is this Thursday, December 13, and starts at 8pm. There is a suggested donation of $15.

Soprano Sofia Dimitrova and violinist Stani Dimitrova are the superb sisters who interpret this piece, joined by Catherine Miller on piano.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_Ni9HXfiRiz4/R167A3z3DUI/AAAAAAAAANw/blLY5bl7LLk/s200/SofiaDimitrova.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142753448159546690" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_Ni9HXfiRiz4/R167BHz3DVI/AAAAAAAAAN4/NHijMO2yA4U/s200/StaniDimitrova.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142753452454514002" />

Sofia Dimitrova selected a program that represents a terrific snapshot of contemporary vocal music. (If I may say so given that one of my pieces was scheduled!) Marilyn Bliss, David Tcimpidis, Paul Moravec, Kevin McCarter, and Raphael Fusco are all terrific writers for the voice. I hope Sofia will repeat this exact concert again; anyone interested in vocal music of today should hear such repertoire sung so perfectly.

Lots of thanks to Sofia and her ideal accompanist, Catherine Miller. And the evening would not have been complete without the superb contribution of Stani Dimitrova on violin, who added another color on the night to my Rilke songs.

It’s been quiet on the blog, but behind the scenes there are concert developments for the upcoming year. First and foremost, hold October 16 for a concert at Saint Peters, more details to follow very soon.

Also in the year ahead, there will be a few new theater songs premiered, and I expect some pieces of mine to be played in December, February, March, and June. I have excellent performers lined up, including soprano Sofia Dimitrova, flutists Mary Barto and Jonathan Engle, violinist Stani Dimitrova, pianists Cathy Miller and Tomoko Nakamura. And of course as always, some surprises! Stay tuned!
