Here are a few pics from the concert at Mannes College of Music last Monday, October 22. Aurora Borealis, with Tiffany DuMouchelle, soprano, and Stephen Solook, percussion, performed my Three Songs of Carl Sandburg.

A little bit of trivia: Tiffany performed the premiere of this piece way back in 2002 when it was written with piano accompaniment! Many thanks for keeping this piece going all these years.

The concert was an impressive mix of older and newer material, including a few songs by Chopin! I had always heard he wrote a few songs, but had never heard them before.

June 5, 2007 NYCC Concert

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity for my Three Songs of Carl Sandburg to be performed again, sung again by soprano Sofia Dimitrova. The concert was presented at Saint Peter’s Church in midtown Manhattan, under the auspices of the New York Composers Circle.

Here are several pics (click to enlarge) from the evening. First, there’s Sofia chatting with her mother and grandmother before the concert (with me chiming in on the right.)

Then I am addressing the audience before the performance, saying a word or two about the piece. Followed by Sofia singing (and the tip of my head visible at the piano).

Last, the reception after the concert, with 2004 Pulitzer Prize Winner Paul Moravec in the red shirt on the right. His Vita Brevis was performed by soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle with Julie McBride on piano.

It was a terrific concert; many thanks to all for their support at the concert!

Aurora Borealis performs Three Elegies, March 25, 2007

I was very happy with the excellent performance of Three Elegies as performed by Aurora Borealis, the new music duo comprised of Stephen Solook on percussion and the charming soprano, Tiffany DuMouchelle. You can read more about them at Tonal Center Trio. (That’s the website of the trio that includes Adam Berkowitz on clarinet.)

Three Elegies at Symphony Space

Three Elegies received its second performance on March 9, 2007 at the Thalia at Symphony Space in New York City, in a concert presented by the New York Composers Circle. The performers were Aurora Borealis, the new music duo comprised of soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle and percussionist Stephen Solook. All credit goes to the performers for finding the composition‚Äôs themes of loss, meaning, and acceptance.

Three Elegies to be Performed

Reminder: Today, March 9, 2007, my Three Elegies for soprano and percussion will be performed at the Thalia at Symphony Space, Broadway at 95th Street. Concert time is 7:30pm. Tiffany DuMouchelle and Steven Solook are the performers. This is a concert being presented by the New York Composers Circle, so lots of other composers and players will be on board. “Three Elegies” Premieres

My new piece, “Three Elegies” for soprano and percussion will be premiered at Mannes College of Music on Wednesday, December 6 at 8pm. Performing will be the duo, Aurora Borealis, comprised of Tiffany DuMouchelle (hot off her recent Alice Tully Hall debut) and percussionist Stephen Solook.

“Three Elegies” is a song cycle of three short pieces: “I Died for Beauty” (text by Emily Dickinson), “Tichborne’s Elegy” (text by Chidiock Tichborne) and “Exile (After the Chinese)” (text by Hart Crane).

Other composers being performed are Keith Fitch, Jorge Sosa, Seth Rozanoff, and Raphael Fusco. Adam Berkowitz will play clarinet on several pieces, as well.

Mannes College’s Concert Hall is on the second floor at 150 West 85th Street, New York City. This is a free concert!

But if you are unable to attend, this same piece, with the same performers, will be performed March 9, 2007 at 7:30pm at the Thalia at Symphony Space, Broadway at 95th Street, in a concert presented by the New York Composers Circle (www.nycomposerscircle.org). Suggested contribution for that concert is $15.

Two pieces Premiered at Mannes

Mannes College of Music

In February 2003, at the annual concert of new music by Mannes faculty and alumni, two of Richard Russell’s recent compositions were presented. Just before intermission, Three Songs of Carl Sandburg was premiered with soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle accompanied by R. Stewart Powell, piano. After intermission, Haim Avitsur performed the solo on a piece for trombone and CD titled Balance.
