On Friday March 22, the New York Composers Circle presented an “Encores” Outreach Program at the JASA West Side Community Center on the upper west side of Manhattan. Flautist Michael Laderman, accompanied by Marcia Eckert, performed my “Fast Tides, Slow Tides” along with works by Debra Kaye, Paul Hindemith, Gloria Colicchio, and Roger Zahab. I served as the emcee on behalf of the NYCC, although Michael and Marcia introduced most of the pieces.

Since I’m taking pictures, I don’t have a picture of me at the event! But here are three pics from the day.

On Tuesday, April 5, 2011 “Fast Tides, Slow Tides” for flute and piano had its New York premiere at¬†Saint Peters Church at Citigroup Center. Michael Laderman, flute, and Marcia Eckert, piano, really invested themselves into the performance. The piece won accolades from those in attendance. John Eaton, a 1990 Fellow of the MacArthur “genius grant” Foundation, wrote in an email “…how much I enjoyed your piece on Tuesday.” Jacob E. Goodman, the founder of the New York Composers Circle, also sent an email: “I really liked your piece…I thought it was beautifully put together.”

In introductory comments before the performance, I explained how the composition has bounced around the world but had not been played in New York City yet. Peter Sheridan has performed the piece, as I’ve detailed here.

The concert is being presented by the New York Composers Circle, and the performers are Michael Laderman, flute, and Marcia Eckert, piano. There is a¬†$20 suggested donation, payable at the door. Other composers on the evening include¬†Brian Fennelly’s “Sock Monkeys,” for two clarinets;¬†Debra Kaye’s “Finding Accord,” for piano trio;¬†Eugene Marlow’s¬†“Three Pieces for Woodwind Trio”;¬†Peri Mauer’s¬†“Rhapsodance,” for clarinet and piano;¬†Gayther Myers’s¬†“Sonata Solo,” for unaccompanied bassoon;¬†David Picton’s¬†“Music for the Birds,” for woodwind quintet;¬†Cesar Vuksic’s Tango Variations, for clarinet and piano.

The New York Composers Circle concerts are always a high watermark of the new music concert season, and I am delighted to share the bill with these quality composers and musicians. The concert starts at 8pm and will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. Hope to see you there!

Peter Sheridan, an Australian-based specialist in low flutes, recently performed my “Fast Tides, Slow Tides” in Portland, Oregon. This was a special arrangement written for him to perform on alto flute. I was not able to be there, but he reports:

I performed Fast tides on Thurs. May 6th at the Old Church in Portland, OR. It was by invitation of the PSU Instrumental Music Club. I gave several lecture demonstrations on the instruments that week and did discuss a few of the ‘fantastic’ rhythmic complexities of Fast Tides in the class for composers. Again I discussed the piece and demonstrated a few sections on Tues. April 28th at Fresno, Cal State for the flute studio. It is a wonderful work Richard. I would like to record it next year.
